Richard Sharpe military army of Wellesley, future Duke of Wellington. The British army is marching from Lisbon to Madrid, accompanied by English troops, which proved to be just greedy and inept. Sharpe is aggregated to the battalion of Sir Henry Simmerson, which obtained the rank of colonel in the militia, has no military experience, but it's pompous, pedantic and strict with his men until they touch, and sometimes exceed, the limits of sadism. Unfortunately Simmerson also has powerful political allies. He entered immediately into conflict with the rich Lieutenant Gibbons, grandson of Simmerson, and with his friend Lieutenant Berry, Sharpe stands out in a brilliant military action that earned him a promotion to captain. But Simmerson, in the same action that has lost the flag, thus disgracing the battalion, wrote immediately to London for annulment of the promotion and the immediate deployment of Sharpe in the West Indies, speaking a sort of death sentence, given the conditions of life of those garrisons. The only hope of salvation for Sharpe is making an heroic time to undo the negative effects of hostility Simmerson: get hold of one of the golden eagles that Napoleon himself over to the French battalions, an action that has never before been accomplished.

My comment:
first novel written by Cornwell (1981) about the adventures of Richard Sharpe. The history books published in Italian is really confused: only nine out of little more than a dozen novels published by us, and following a policy is not chronological, nor as to when they were written either in relation to the chronology of events affecting the character. Having said that I preferred to start from what was still the first, when it was published in the original language. It 's really a surprise. The author is already remarkably mature, full mastery of narrative and in terms of style, and above all to the story. A nice mix of action and passion with well-defined characters, especially the protagonist. The historical background is nice but does not over and that the basic story is fictional but is true for the consumption of the author and then the readers. In short, I was really satisfied with this reading!
