Will My Appendix Burst If I Bite My Nails

Stephen King - Duma Key

*** Warning: The following advances the plot (SPOILER) ***

First Comment, NO SPOILER, written while I was reading the book and I arrived at page 450. First

style Uncle Steve gets along, I would say, very well.
Maybe it's helped by the translator himself in shape. As I happen to
noted recently, King makes an interesting work on the language.
is not the same as in Lisey's Story, however, where there are all those words
invented. No, it's a bit more subtle. The mental state of
protagonist is very, very well represented, both for what it says is
through the words he uses.
publishing the incipit (I have not written down, I copied from a site,
hope is right):
"We start with a blank space.
not necessarily have to be paper or canvas, but I must be white.
We say white because we need a word, but the definition is correct
"Nothing." Black is the absence of light, but white is the absence
memory, the color of can not remember.
(...) Imagine a little girl, little more than baby. Nearly ninety years ago
has fallen from a toy cart, hit her head on a rock and forgot all
. Not only his name, everything! And then he remembered that day
just enough to take a pencil and draw that first sign
hesitant to white. A horizon line, of course. But also a slot where
rampant black.
Imagine, however, the hand that lifts the pencil ... hesitates ...
marks and then white. Imagine the courage of that first effort to restore the world
drawing it. I will always love that girl,
in spite of what it cost me. Devo. I have no choice.
Pictures are magic, as you know. "
It 's a chapter called" How to make a drawing "(there's others),
not exactly the main story, a point of view" side "but important.
The protagonist is named Edgar Freemantle and the narration is in first person
. The identification is complete, after a while you think
* * with the main character and ... According

comment, written planning to anticipate situations contained, at most up to page. 185.

The novel is full of references, both direct and indirect, and other works, his life, I've found there
similarities with certain situations and elements of other novels:
Bag of Bones, The Shining, the series of Dark Tower, Insomnia, Lisey ...

NB SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT ALREADY 'read the book (CONTINUE IF YOU HAVE ALREADY
' READ UP ON PAGE. 185)

Edgar Freemantle was a bad accident on site. A crane crushes his
machine, too bad that he was inside.
His life falls apart.
His wife leaves him. He is not fully master of himself, he
moments of ferocious anger in which risk of harm to others and
can not always remember the right words when speaking.
He moved to Duma Key, with the possibility to go back to drawing and
try to pick up the pieces.
who sees the drawings, and himself, he realizes that they are very good. Meanwhile
befriends Wireman and knows Miss Eastlake
(an old wheelchair that Wireman ago by caregiver).

In this first part of King's novel is dedicated to building the
history: the environment, the house (Big Pink), the island's thoughts
Freemantle, a certain definition of the main characters and their relationships
(for example, visiting her daughter's favorite).
In fact we are already "inside" the story and the things that will happen
a consequence of them below. We say that the general atmosphere is
what you feel in the best of the latest novels of King
We are certainly in the climax of the story, but the narration is very good
and the whole is certainly intriguing.
In the meantime I've already finished the novel: we do not resist this one!
Anyway I put another comment up to the before the show,
the rest will come later.

third comment.

NB SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT ALREADY 'read the book (CONTINUE IF YOU HAVE ALREADY

Well, yes! The designs are really good, but also disturbing.
What is the relationship between what is represented in the drawings and the reality? (
is not really a spoiler: there the fact that in the Sperling
blurted the cover flap.
Edgar is good, very good. As Dali? Bravo and cursed. And why
Wireman, a former lawyer, is in this forsaken place from God?

King, as we have become accustomed in his best novels, takes us
hand, say with the right to Edgar, and leads us gently as with
Edgar, in his descent into hell.
I find it very good relationship with Wireman, the discovery of
"betrayal" of his wife and Edgar decides what to do. The transition from
novel "mainstream" (with chills, though) to "horror"
is gradual and not all that bad so far as it reflects on the meaning of art
. The verbosity of King is only apparent, or
perhaps more related to the plot. What I mean is that reading individual sentences
not find them quite lengthy, indeed in some ways are
dense, because all that says it portrays and analyzes
down to the smallest detail. In this way the characters are alive,
motivations clearer. Then there's the fact that everything is told in first person
: If it is true that the dialogues are not so
is also true that, in a sense, the whole book becomes a sort of monologue
. E 'for this reason that the basic theme is uniquely yours:
the incident, the family, the fact that Fremantle is rich, and
artist, everything is based on the experience of "direct" King. I wonder if
Tabitha has been faithful! :-)))

Final comment.

Not really spoilers.

:-) If you read the book you know how it ended is not it?
At this point you could really tell a lot of things. The story "holds" almost to the end. It is not that ultimately reach some real surprises, but things fall, they do. There is a point where you switch to blindly believe the witch, which I think gives a little "suspension of disbelief", but all in all not ends in ridicule (as in "The Dreamcatcher" for understand). Let's just say that King not doing as well as in the past with the horror of the purest, but after 400 pages of excellent storytelling and go think about forgiving potergli third of the book slightly less nice and say that, overall, this is one of his best novels (I, I love him, they account for at least twenty "five star"). King Bravo, I look forward to the super-mega-malloppone! Bravo
